A family affair – the TORTOUR a family event?

The TORTOUR a family event? Yes, there is such a thing! Find out more about Melissa Riesen and her ultracycling family in the new interview.

The TORTOUR has been with you for a long time, how should we understand that?

“My godfather has been riding various ultracycling races for a long time, including the TORTOUR. Even as a child, I was able to join in the excitement and get a taste of ultracycling. In 2020, my father, godfather, cousin and I entered the ultra-distance race as a team of four. At the time, this was correctly abandoned early due to the tragic death of Roger Nachbur. Despite this incisive experience, my father and I could not resist the urge to ride and experience this TORTOUR ourselves for long. So, as a father-daughter duo, we started 2021 together with our 6 helpers and successfully completed the ultra route for us. In 2023, my godfather set off solo on the 1000, my father on the 500 and I on the 250. In a way, the Tortour is almost a family event. “

What makes ultracycling so special for you?

“The fascination for me is to push my own boundaries and grow beyond myself. This experience always brings with it stories that you can laugh about, learn from and benefit from personally. I also enjoy spending a lot of time with my passion for racing bikes.”

What advice would you give to (young) women who want to try out ultracycling but still have inhibitions?

“My tip is to approach longer distances slowly and not suddenly do too much. I also find that a train connection option every now and then gives me more certainty of not being stranded. In terms of safety, I always inform my sister about my planned route and check in between. But what works even better is if you simply get together. It’s also good to cycle longer distances together.”
.
You can tell that Melissa already has a lot of ultracycling in her blood! Thank you very much for the great insights and we wish you and your whole family a successful TORTOUR!
